Engine Oil Cooler Diagnosis & Replacement in South London

Oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil or a leak around the filter housing does not automatically prove the engine oil cooler has failed. SP88 checks the contamination pattern, housing, seals and other plausible causes before agreeing replacement.

Confirm the source of contamination or leakage

Engine oil coolers can leak externally or allow oil and coolant to mix internally, but cylinder-head gasket faults, cracked housings, oil-filter assemblies and previous contamination can create similar evidence. Automatic transmission coolers are separate systems and require different diagnosis.

We inspect accessible leak paths, fluid condition and the vehicle history before identifying the likely engine-oil-cooler repair.

Symptoms we investigate

  • Oil residue in the coolant expansion tank
  • Creamy contamination in the oil or under the filler cap
  • External oil or coolant leak near the filter housing
  • Cooling-system pressure or temperature problem
  • Repeated contamination after earlier repair work

Stop using the vehicle if oil pressure is low, the engine is overheating, fluids are mixing heavily or levels are dropping quickly.

Cooler type, seals and fluids

Many engines use an oil-to-coolant heat exchanger attached to the filter housing; others use an air-cooled unit and hoses. Some repairs need only specified seals, while others require a cooler or complete housing assembly. Parts are matched from the registration or VIN.

Replacement may involve draining oil and coolant, renewing filters or seals, using the correct fluid specifications and cleaning affected circuits. The amount of flushing required depends on the contamination and cannot be promised from a photo alone.

Mobile and workshop limits

Mobile work may be suitable for an accessible confirmed cooler or housing on a cold engine with safe parking and manageable contamination. Workshop work may be recommended for extensive flushing, pressure testing, severe overheating, restricted access, suspected head-gasket damage or repairs needing longer controlled testing.

SP88 does not claim that a cooler replacement will cure contamination caused by another engine fault.
