Camshaft Position Sensor Diagnosis & Replacement in South London

A camshaft-position fault code does not automatically prove the sensor has failed. SP88 checks the code, live data, wiring and the relationship between camshaft and crankshaft signals first, then confirms whether sensor replacement is suitable.

A code can point beyond the sensor

Camshaft-sensor faults can be caused by damaged wiring, poor connections, low supply voltage, oil contamination, an incorrect signal gap or a control-unit issue. Correlation and timing codes may instead indicate a stretched chain, belt timing error, variable-valve-timing fault, oil-pressure problem or damaged trigger wheel.

We use the fault details and available live data to avoid replacing a sensor when the engine timing or another system needs attention.

Symptoms we investigate

  • Long cranking or intermittent non-start
  • Engine cuts out and restarts later
  • Reduced power, limp mode or poor performance
  • Misfire or unstable running with a camshaft-signal code
  • Warning light after timing or cylinder-head work

A non-starting vehicle may have several possible causes, so a stored sensor code is treated as evidence to test, not proof of a failed part.

Correct bank, position and sensor

Engines may use separate inlet and exhaust sensors on one or more banks. Connector shape, mounting depth and signal type vary, even between engines in the same model. SP88 uses the registration or VIN and the confirmed fault location before ordering parts.

Accessible wiring and connectors are inspected for damage or oil ingress. Where replacement is justified, the sensor and seal are fitted correctly and the signal or fault status is rechecked.

Mobile and workshop limits

Mobile diagnosis or replacement may be suitable where the sensor is accessible, the vehicle is safely parked and no internal timing fault is suspected. Workshop testing may be recommended for restricted access, repeated correlation faults, suspected chain or belt problems, damaged wiring inside the loom or an intermittent fault needing extended testing.

SP88 does not promise that replacing a sensor will correct mechanical timing, oil-control or engine-management faults.
