Ignition Coil Diagnosis & Replacement in South London
Rough idle, hesitation or a misfire on a petrol engine? SP88 tests the ignition system before recommending a coil or coil pack. Similar symptoms can come from spark plugs, wiring, injectors, air leaks or engine compression.
Find the cause before buying a coil
Symptoms to describe
Tell us whether the fault happens cold, hot, under acceleration or in wet weather. Include any warning lights, recent repairs and whether the engine starts normally.
Codes need interpretation
A P0300 or cylinder-misfire code does not prove a coil has failed. Even a coil-circuit code can involve its wiring, connector, power supply or control circuit.
What SP88 checks
- Stored faults, relevant live data and when the misfire occurs.
- Coil connectors, wiring, power and earth arrangements as appropriate.
- Cracks, carbon tracking and oil or water around plug wells and coil boots.
- Spark-plug condition and correct specification where access permits.
- Whether further fuel, air-leak or mechanical testing is needed.
Tests are chosen for the coil design and vehicle. We do not treat a simple resistance reading or a code scan alone as a complete diagnosis. Broader running problems belong with our car diagnostics service.
Replacing the confirmed faulty part
Some engines use one coil per cylinder; others use a shared coil pack or cassette. We confirm the engine and correct assembly before ordering. A single failed coil does not automatically mean every coil needs replacing.
The repair can include the correct coil or pack, inspection of associated plugs and connectors, and checks for contamination that could damage the replacement. Accessible underlying leaks or wiring faults are quoted separately where necessary.
After fitting, we check engine running and fault information under suitable safe conditions. Persistent symptoms trigger further diagnosis rather than a claim that changing the coil must cure the car.
Plugs, coils and other misfire causes
Spark-plug replacement is separate maintenance: worn or incorrect plugs can affect ignition performance, but replacing them is not automatically part of a coil quote. If testing points to fuelling, see fuel-injector diagnosis.
Mobile work
Many accessible ignition jobs can be carried out where the car is safely parked. Suitability depends on the engine layout, weather protection, parts and testing needed.
Workshop limits
Major intake dismantling, damaged threads, severe mechanical faults or unsafe running may need workshop facilities. Parts and labour are confirmed for your exact vehicle.
Flashing engine light or severe shaking?
Stop safely and avoid continuing to drive with a severe misfire or flashing engine warning light. Unburned fuel can damage the catalytic converter. Switch the engine off and seek advice; recovery may be the safest option.
Ignition-coil questions
Can you replace a coil at my home?
Often, if access and conditions are suitable. Send your registration and postcode so we can confirm the job rather than promising it for every engine.
Should all coils be changed together?
That depends on the design and findings. Individual coils may be replaced individually; a shared pack can be one complete assembly. Any wider replacement is explained and agreed.
Is this a diesel glow-plug service?
No. This page covers petrol spark-ignition coils, including suitable petrol engines in hybrid vehicles. Diesel starting and glow-plug faults need their own diagnosis.
Arrange your ignition-system assessment
Send your registration, postcode, mileage and symptoms. SP88 confirms the job, parts, safe access and price before work starts. Additional work needs your agreement.
Scheduled starts: weekdays 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Weekends closed. South London and nearby Surrey coverage includes Wallington, Sutton, Carshalton, Croydon and Purley, subject to location and job suitability.
You can also contact SP88 or view all services. If the booking page does not show the job you need, call or message so the correct work can be agreed.
