Track Rod End Replacement in South London
Steering play, knocking or uneven tyre wear can point to a worn track rod end, but the cause must be confirmed. SP88 checks the steering linkage and nearby suspension before ordering the correct part for suitable mobile replacement.
Diagnosis before parts
A track rod end connects the steering linkage to the hub, but similar symptoms can come from an inner track rod, steering rack, ball joint, control-arm bush, wheel bearing or tyre. We inspect the reported side, check for play and damaged boots, and assess related components before agreeing the job.
Parts are matched to the registration or VIN and the exact inner or outer position. We do not infer compatibility from appearance alone.
Signs that need a steering check
- Free play or looseness at the steering wheel
- Knocking when turning or crossing bumps
- Wandering, pulling or an off-centre steering wheel
- Uneven or rapid tyre wear
- An MOT advisory or failure naming a steering joint
Tyre pressure, alignment and other joints can cause the same signs, so replacement should follow diagnosis.
What the agreed repair includes
Where the track rod end is confirmed faulty, SP88 can remove the worn outer joint, fit the correctly matched replacement and recheck the connection and steering movement. A split rack boot, seized adjuster, worn inner joint or rack fault changes the scope and may require additional parts or workshop work.
Any extra work is explained and needs your approval. A joint is not replaced merely because another steering part is worn.
Wheel alignment is a separate requirement
Marking the old position or counting turns helps preserve an approximate setting; it does not prove that the wheels are correctly aligned. A proper wheel-alignment check is required after track rod end replacement, especially where the old joint was worn or the adjuster moved.
SP88 will state that requirement clearly and will not claim an accurate final alignment without the appropriate measurement equipment and confirmed job scope.
Mobile suitability and safety
Mobile work needs firm, level ground, safe access and enough space around the wheel. Severe corrosion, a seized locknut, damaged threads, a worn inner rod or a steering-rack problem can make workshop repair the safer route.
Do not keep driving with severe steering play, a joint at risk of separation, loss of directional control or tyre contact. Stop safely and arrange advice or recovery.
