Gearbox Oil Change in South London

Vehicle-specific gearbox and transmission-fluid service for suitable cars and vans across Sutton, Croydon, Purley, Wallington and nearby Surrey.

The right fluid, level procedure and service method depend on the exact gearbox—not just the registration.

Correct fluid matters more than a generic oil change

Gearbox fluids differ in specification, quantity and service procedure. Before agreeing work, SP88 checks what can be identified from the registration or VIN, the gearbox type, the required fluid and whether the job can be completed safely at the vehicle.

Identify the gearbox

Manual, conventional automatic, dual-clutch and CVT units have different requirements. A gearbox code may be needed where model data is ambiguous.

Confirm service parts

The correct fluid specification comes first. Some services also require a filter, sump pan, gasket, sealing washer or replacement plug.

Check the level method

Some gearboxes use a dipstick; others need a level plug, a defined fluid temperature, scan data or workshop-level access.

When to check a gearbox-fluid service

  • A documented service interval is due.
  • The maintenance history is incomplete or unknown and you want the correct requirement checked.
  • There is visible seepage or a suspected fluid loss.
  • Manual changes feel notchy, or an automatic has delayed engagement or harsh shifts.
  • A transmission warning, overheating message or unusual noise has appeared.

Symptoms do not automatically mean the fluid is the cause. Low fluid can follow a leak, and shift problems can involve controls, clutches, solenoids, wiring, sensors or internal wear. Diagnosis comes before a speculative fluid change.

What SP88 confirms before work

Manual gearboxes

We check the lubricant grade, capacity, drain and fill access, plug condition and any model-specific level procedure.

Conventional automatics

We establish whether the service is a drain-and-refill or includes a filter or sump, and whether temperature-controlled level setting is required.

DSG, DCT and CVT units

These are not treated as one generic service. Compatibility, exact fluid, filter requirements, procedure and equipment must be confirmed first.

We will not assume compatibility from a model name alone or substitute a universal fluid where a manufacturer-specific specification is required.

Drain and refill, filter service or specialist fluid exchange?

A straightforward drain-and-refill replaces only the fluid that can be drained safely. Some vehicles need a filter or sump-pan service. Others specify a temperature window, diagnostic data, adaptations, a lift or specialist exchange equipment.

SP88 does not present a machine flush as suitable for every gearbox. If the documented method or vehicle condition calls for specialist workshop equipment, we will explain that before work is booked.

Mobile service has sensible limits

Suitable mobile work

  • Vehicle and gearbox specification can be confirmed.
  • The correct fluid and service parts are available.
  • The vehicle is on firm, level private ground.
  • Safe access and the documented level-setting method are achievable.

Workshop or specialist route

  • Lift access or machine exchange is required.
  • The unit is sealed or the fill/level process cannot be completed safely on site.
  • There is severe contamination, a substantial leak or suspected internal damage.
  • Manufacturer-specific equipment or procedures are needed.

Appointments and coverage

Scheduled services start on weekdays at 10:00, 12:00 or 14:00. Weekends are closed.

We cover Sutton and nearby parts of South London and Surrey, including Wallington, Croydon and Purley. Send the registration or VIN, current mileage, service history and any symptoms so we can check the correct route before confirming the visit.

Gearbox oil change FAQs

Does every gearbox need its fluid changed?

Intervals and procedures vary. SP88 checks the vehicle and gearbox-specific information rather than applying one interval to every car.

Does “lifetime fluid” mean it should never be checked?

That wording is not a universal service rule. Vehicle age, use, leaks, symptoms and the manufacturer’s information still matter. We confirm the applicable requirement before recommending work.

Will new fluid cure a shifting fault?

Not necessarily. A fault may be hydraulic, electrical, mechanical or software-related. Warning lights, delayed engagement, slipping or harsh shifts should be assessed before treating fluid as the repair.

Can SP88 service every automatic, DSG or CVT?

No universal compatibility is claimed. We check the exact gearbox, fluid, parts, access and level-setting method. If the work needs specialist workshop equipment, we will say so.

Check the right service for your vehicle

Have the registration or VIN ready, plus the mileage, known service history and any symptoms or warning messages. SP88 will confirm whether a mobile gearbox-fluid service is appropriate and what the job requires before booking.
